Dr. Michele Pickett, Chattanooga pediatrician and professor, brought a deeply moving testimony of God’s grace and faithfulness. She is the founding director of Lifespring Community Health, a children’s clinic which provides healthcare for children in poor families (and other children as well). You can listen to her powerful testimony below.
Coty Wamp is a CCS alumna who has served as a Federal Public Defender and now serves as a public defender in Hamilton County. From her experience working with poor people accused of crimes, she shared with us about Christ’s love for “the least of these.” Coty will be meeting in smaller venues with some of our young women interested and asking more about her talk.
Mary Haberkorn is an artist, Bible teacher and scholar (finishing her doctorate in women’s studies at Dallas Theological Seminary). She came and talked on the issue of calling in the life of a Christian.
Karen Ellis, writer and performance artist, brought our students a stunning presentation on Phyllis Wheatley, the first Black woman in America to publish a book. You can listen to the amazing story of God’s grace below.
It was a tremendous blessing for us to have Lurone Jennings as our first Black History Month speaker this year. Coach Jennings is currently the administrator for Youth and Family Development with the Mayor’s Office in the City of Chattanooga. I mistakenly credited Mr. Jennings as the founder of the Bethlehem Community Center. He founded the Bethlehem Credit Union and was the director of the Bethlehem Community Center for some time (in addition to much other work in our community).
I failed to mention that Coach Jennings is also an author. In 2012, he published the book, Crises in Urban America.
The CCS Upper School Chaplain, Travis Hutchinson, spoke on the Ooltewah tragedy and bullying during last Wednesday’s chapel. It is easy to declare something like that would never happen here and feel self-righteous. But how different are we really? Listen to the message below.

Pastor Morgan Lusk, Associate Pastor for Youth and Families at Hixson Presbyterian Church, spoke in the Upper School chapels on January 13. In the High School he talked about why and how we should repent of fear. You can listen to his very helpful message below.

Chaplain Hutchinson taught on Matthew 2:1-11, the account of the wise men and their visit to the Christ child. His topic was, What can the wise men tell us about what kind of worshipers we are?

On November 18 our Middle and High Schools were blessed by a visit from Mrs. Linda Summer, founder and director of The Agape Puppets, an international children’s ministry with teams on five continents. Linda has trained and equipped hundreds of national Christians in children’s ministry around the world and personally shared the Gospel of Christ with hundreds of thousands of children. As someone who herself came to faith as a child, she has a deep understanding of the need of children to hear the hope of the Gospel. Linda is a former educator. She and her husband, Mike (now with Jesus), founded the ministry at the instigation of their two (at the time) Middle School sons, over 25 years ago.
